Northern Virginia Window/Doors Projects

Window Styles We Install

Double Hung

Both sashes operate and most tilt in for easy interior cleaning. The most common style in Northern Virginia homes and the easiest to maintain. Available in virtually every size.

Casement

Crank-out, hinged on one side, swings open up to 90°. Good over kitchen sinks, in bay configurations, or anywhere you want full ventilation and easy interior cleaning.

Awning

Installed outside the entry door. Cuts drafts, blocks driving rain, adds a security layer. Extends the life of the door behind it.

Slider

Sashes move left to right, the horizontal equivalent of a double hung. Designed for openings wider than they are tall, common on ranch-style and split-level homes.

Bay & Bow Windows

Space-efficient operation on a track. Good for kitchens and family rooms where a swinging door would interfere with furniture. Can slide either direction.

Garden Windows

A small projecting box with a fixed face and two operable casement side panels. Smaller than a bay, ideal over kitchen sinks, adds light, depth, and a shelf without a structural change.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Window Replacement FAQs

Have questions about replacing your windows? Here are answers to some of the questions we hear most often from homeowners throughout Northern Virginia.

Most window installations take one day from start to finish. A crew of two can typically replace 8–15 windows in a single day depending on style and accessibility. Bay and bow window projects, which involve framing and structural work, occasionally extend to two days.

Single-window replacements in standard styles typically run $600–$1,200 installed, depending on size, style, and manufacturer. Full-house projects vary widely. We measure your specific openings and give you an itemized written price before anything is ordered— no ballpark estimates, no surprises at invoice.

A pocket replacement (also called an insert replacement) drops a new window unit into your existing frame, leaving the exterior casing and interior trim untouched. A full-frame replacement removes the entire window assembly down to the rough opening and installs a new unit with a new frame and trim.

For like-for-like replacements—same rough opening size, with no structural changes—most Northern Virginia jurisdictions (Fairfax, Arlington) do not require a permit. Projects that change opening size, add egress windows in bedrooms, or involve structural modifications generally do require one.

For most Northern Virginia homes, Harvey and MI Sunrise hit the best cost-to-performance point. Andersen 400 Series and ProVia are the step-up picks for larger budgets or homes with more demanding architectural requirements. Simonton is a strong pick when fast lead times matter.

Yes. Window replacement can generally be completed during cold weather, provided conditions are safe and suitable for installation. Our crew works efficiently to minimize the amount of time your home is exposed to the outdoor elements, and we take the necessary steps to ensure proper installation and sealing.

Door FAQs

Common Questions About Exterior Doors

Get answers to common questions about exterior door replacement, materials, energy efficiency, security, installation, and costs.

Signs that it may be time to replace an exterior door include drafts, difficulty opening or closing, visible rot or damage, air leaks around the frame, fogged glass, outdated hardware, or poor energy efficiency.

If your door is still structurally sound, some issues may be repairable. We can evaluate the door and help you determine whether repair or replacement makes the most sense.

Atlas Exteriors installs a variety of exterior doors, including entry doors, front doors, patio doors, sliding doors, and other replacement door systems.

We offer multiple styles, materials, colors, glass options, hardware, and configurations so your new door can complement the style of your home.

The best material depends on your priorities, budget, and the style of your home. Fiberglass doors are popular because they offer durability, energy efficiency, and low maintenance. Steel doors provide strength and security, while wood doors offer a traditional, high-end appearance.

We can help you compare the available options and select a door based on appearance, performance, maintenance, and budget.

Yes. Modern exterior doors can provide significantly better energy efficiency than older doors, particularly when the existing door has air leaks, deteriorated weatherstripping, or outdated glass.

A properly installed replacement door can help reduce drafts and improve the overall comfort of your home.

In some situations, yes. Whether the existing frame can be reused depends on its condition, dimensions, and the replacement door system being installed.

If the frame is damaged, deteriorated, out of square, or no longer provides a proper seal, replacing the complete door system may provide a better long-term result.

Most standard exterior door installations can be completed in one day. More complicated installations, multiple doors, or projects requiring additional framing or trim work may take longer.

We review the scope of the installation with you before work begins so you know what to expect.

Yes. We can coordinate your new door with the existing or new siding, trim, gutters, and other exterior materials.

If you are completing multiple exterior projects at once, coordinating the door, trim, and siding can create a more consistent finished appearance throughout the home.

Exterior door replacement costs vary depending on the door style, material, size, glass options, hardware, frame condition, and installation requirements.

Atlas Exteriors provides a detailed estimate so you can compare your options and understand the cost before moving forward.

Yes. Removal and disposal of the existing door are included as part of the installation process. We clean up the work area when the installation is complete.

Yes. Replacing multiple exterior doors as part of the same project can make it easier to coordinate styles, colors, glass, hardware, and other exterior details.
